A highlight of the trip to Berlin was visiting the Hofbräuhaus in Berlin. A famous beer hall all over the world, it didn't disappoint in its' homeland! I'm not a beer drinker, but the beer in Germany is the most amazing, light, cold, non-bloating beer I've ever had in my life! Prost, Berlin!
When in Germany...one must try all the local delicacies. Here are some of my favourites...and where to find them!! 1. Weinerschnitzel You can't miss these in Germany! So simple, so delicious, sold in almost every restaurant you could find! First night in Berlin, came across this truly authentic, family run, little German restaurant. Think, beer steins, wooden tables, crowded full of locals, and portions huge enough to feed a family of 5! If you visit Berlin, you must go to Dicke Wirtin in Charlottenburg. Some tips to help you enjoy your experience: - make sure you go on an empty stomach, portions are HUGE! - be prepared to wait for a table...enjoy your first beer as you wait! 2. Bratwurst Sausage and Sauerkaut When I think of German food...sausages is the first thing that comes to my mind. Mixed with Sauerkraut and mustard. In a delicious, crispy, fresh white bun. I've never been the biggest fan of Sauerkraut, having tried it many times in London, but it's something else in Germany. Such a subtle pickled taste...and excellent for my intestines, I'm sure! We came across the restaurant Gasthaus Krombach in Charlottenburg by fluke. It had been one I'd found online in a search, but it seemed too far away to get to on foot. By fluke, we walked right by the restaurant on our last day in Berlin, so decided to give it a go! Service was great, the food was served fresh and hot, and whilst the place wasn't packed, it was full of local Germans which gave it an authentic feel. Again, be prepared for big servings! The Germans don't hold back. 3. Currywurst My new favourite snack on the go! A perfect boost after a long morning of sightseeing...or the perfect midnight snack after a few too many beers! You can find currywurst stands on almost every corner in Berlin. Basically, it's a steamed, then fried, pork sausage, covered in curry ketchup. If you're not drooling right now, there's something wrong with you. Served with fries, it's well worth the 6 euros that it will cost you! When in Berlin...it's totally fine to enjoy at least one of these babies every day. 4. Apple Strudel Delicious. My favourite dessert. This particular one was enjoyed at Dicke Wirtin (see above for link). Fresh pastry, warm apple and cinnamon, served with custard and cream. Yum. Just yum. |
