Vodka is huge in Poland, you will find that you are given vodka shots when you arrive at a restaurant, when you pay your bill, to say hello! Our favourite bar was Wodka Bar, a tiny little place with over 200 types of vodka to try! The shots come served on a little wooden tray, and are designed to be sipped (not skulled...!). Lucky for us, my friend and I have different tastes - her preferring sour drinks, and me preferring the sweet ones, so we managed to polish off a few boards with ease. Make sure you try the chocolate flavored vodka! 1. Free Walking Tours I would highly recommend the FREE walking Tour Foundation for very knowledgable and passionate staff. We did the 'Old Town' tour as well as the 'Jewish Quarter' tour in 1 day. About 6 hours of walking but definitely worth it. Learned a lot about the history of Krakow and Poland in general. Also put all of the World War II history into perspective. Best part is that everything is so cheap in Poland so you can leave your guide a generous tip! Looking into Krakow Old Town towards St. Mary's Basilica through the old city walls. See the McDonalds to the left? This was the first McDonalds opened in Krakow onto 10-15 years ago. Before this, the old town had only a handful of restaurants...hard to believe! Krakow Main Square looking onto St. Mary's Basilica. Cool fact - every hour, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, a trumpet player blows a tune from 4 windows at the top of the church. His tune goes out to the north, east, south and west. The top windows of the church are the highest points of Krakow and give a view over the whole city. In the past, it was the trumpet players job to keep a watch over the city and warn the citizens of any dangers like fire or intruders by playing his trumpet. Ghetto Memorial in the Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz). 2. Auschwitz Concentration Camp A day trip you must do when in Krakóv. Whilst the visit was really confronting, haunting, and eerie, I am so glad that we had the opportunity to go. Make sure you go with a guide, their knowledge is phenomenal. 3. Zakopane - Tatras Mountains
This is the winter sports capital of Poland! We came across this stunning spot on a day trip with an organized tour group, viator, who I would highly recommend. It was the perfect time of year to go. The small town on Zakopane was covered in snow, with small market stalls all over town. If you go, you must take the funicular up to the top for stunning views! |
